Couples Baby Showers -- A Special Gift for the New Mom and Dad before the Baby Comes

Recently my daughter hosted a couples baby shower. I went along as she shopped for the food and prizes and offered my maternal tidbits of wisdom here and there. But what I learned is I am not as wise in the current ways as I thought.
In our society the new mom- and dad-to-be go to the nearest store that carries baby things, check out a computerized scanning gun and select everything they would like to have in the house when Junior arrives. It really makes it nice for those shopping for a gift and is great fun for the new mom and dad. But, my daughter wanted to find something that would be a simple, inexpensive gift for the couple to enjoy before the baby was born.
We entered the baby department of a local store and asked the sales clerk what they had for the parents. The clerk was puzzled at our question and suggested a plaything for the baby. A new mom and dad with their small baby tucked snuggly in a sling against his daddy's chest overheard our conversation. She shared with us like we were old friends. Following are a couple of her suggestions and a couple of my own to pamper the parents before the baby comes.
Red Wine and Dark Chocolate Need I say more? It is an opportunity for the new parents to set aside an evening to just put their feet up and relax. Purchase a lined basket and add some filler (looks like Easter basket grass and is sold near the baskets). Grab a bottle of red wine, 2 new wine glasses and some individually wrapped dark chocolates to complete the gift.
Hand and Foot Cookie Cutters If the new parents-to-be enjoy spending time in the kitchen together this is a perfect way for them to make a memory before the big day. Buy a basket or a mixing bowl and fill it with a box of sugar cookie mix and cookie cutters in the shape of a hand and foot. Add some sugar sprinkles or a few tubes of frosting. You can find the cookie cutters at a craft store or the craft department of a superstore. They will have a great time sharing their dreams for their baby as they roll out dough and cut out cookies.
Candles and Essential Oils Burning candles is not recommended because of the soot, but now you can purchase a hot plate of sorts for a candle in a jar. As it warms the wax you still get the soothing scent. Essential oils are rather controversial as some are considered toxic to a pregnant woman. Talk to a doctor and do your homework before you give this gift.
A Full Body Massage If you really want to give a special pre-delivery gift to the guests of honor present them with a gift certificate for a local massage salon. A full body massage by licensed therapists would be a wonderful treat. This one is a little more pricey, but you know it will be much appreciated.
These suggestions are just to get you started. As you shop, think about the couple's likes and hobbies and you will come up with some ideas of your own.
