The American Idol Season 8 Finale was packed to the gills with entertainment. Good entertainment as only the producers of American Idol could put together. It was a giant party from the start. Even the commercials were entertaining, which makes me wonder what the cost per 30 seconds of advertising was.
The introduction of the judges started the fun with some good-natured ribbing of each, with video clips of their idiosyncrocies. Following that was the reunion of the top 13 performing "So What". The only disappointment was I couldn't remember some of their names.
David Cook performed his new song "Permanent", written to honor his brother. The song is available for download, with the proceeds going to David's foundation to find a cure for cancer. His brother recently died from brain cancer.
Throughout the party, coveted Golden Idol Awards were given in the following catagories: Outstanding Male: Nick Mitchell, aka Norman Gentle; ( I know you remember him) and Best Attitude: Katrina "bikini girl" Darrell (I KNOW you remember her) who was joined in her acceptance perfromance by Kara DioGuardi and Outstanding Female: Tatiana Nicole Del Toro, aka drama queen.
Idol contestants from this season were joined by Queen Latifah, Jason Mraz, Keith Urban, Black Eyed Peas, Cindi Lauper and Lionel Ritchie. How cool would that be, to perform on national television with american music legends! A highlight for me was Danny Gokey's rendition of "Hello", after which he was joined by Loinel Ritchie. Wow!
Finally, the moment everyone was waiting for; the culmination of many months of preparation resulting in changed lives for several contestants, especially one. First, Ryan brought up the parents of both Kris and Adam to get their outlook on the evening. Then, more entertainment, more waiting. OK, so the moment wasn't to be quite yet.... A quick look at Adam's journey from audition to tonight. Adam sang" Beth" then was joined onstage by KISS. Of course, the tongues were plentiful.
The giant concert continued as Carlos Santana took the stage next joined by the top 13. Steve Martin, playing banjo, was joined by Michael Sarver and Megan Joy singing Martin's original compositon, "Pretty Flowers".
Was it time yet? Nope, one more song by the top 8 guys, joined by Rod Stewart, making his entrance on a rising stage.
Kris and Adam took the stage to sing "We Are The Champions" accompanied by Queen.
Great entertainment, but come on! Let's hear the results, already!
Here we go - Kris and Adam were brought onstage and given a few words of encouragement by Simon. The envelope was produced and the winner announced!
Congratulations, Kris Allen! You have worked hard to get to this point. Thank you for letting us in on your dream.
