American Idol Season 8 - Top 4 Sing Rock Classics - May 5, 2009

Tonight's American Idol contestants visited classic rock.  I miss the original song week and think that classic rock should have been done much earlier in the competition, but hey, I'm not the producer and what do I know?  Adam, Allison, Kris and Danny went onstage without a dress rehearsal this week, but it made no difference.  They were all exactly what you would expect to see.  Paula's admission of her addiction to drugs made no difference in the live show tonight and since I am not particularly a Slash fan, I wasn't that impressed by this week's mentor.  For those of you who, like me, are clueless, Slash was lead guitarist for Guns 'n Roses and later started his own band called Velvet Revolver.

Adam started the night off with a Whole Lot of Love.  His voice is very unique and I'm finding I'm growing tired of it already.  I don't think I would buy his album.  Each song he sings is sung higher than "a whole lot of women" can sing.  Anyway, the performance really was good and the girls love the sinister looking bad boy of American Idol.

Allison sang next and again, did a great job.  The only thing I don't like about her is her vibrato.  She seems to not be able to control it muchof the time. It makes it sound like she is trying too hard.

Two duets were performed on tonight's show - first -  Kris and Danny sang Renegade with Simon telling Danny "you were better than Kris".  He was right.

When Kris came onstage next to sing the Beatles' Come Together, it was good.  It was refreshing to hear his clear tone.  But, he is not a rocker and I think this week may be it for him. None of the judges were thrilled by his performance.

Next, Danny, the only contestant never in the bottom three performed Dream On.  Other than the scream at the end, he was good, really good.  He can sing with a clear tone or put a little "fuzz" on the sound.  He is my favorite of this year's singers. While the judges weren't wowed by Danny's performance, Simon did think Danny is safe this week.

The last performance of the night was a duet - Adam and Allison sang Slow Ride and it was very good.  The judges commented they should record a song together and Simon thought Adam may have saved Allison this week with the duet.  Both were outfitted like seasoned hard rockers, looking and sounding the part.

Who goes home tomorrow?  My guess would be Kris.  I think the judges and producers made their choice for the top two clear tonight.  Danny will probably be number 3, with Adam and Allison in the top two.
