American Idol 2009 Season 8 - Brat Pack Tunes - April 28

Tonight's American Idol competition required a few of the 5 remaining contestants to leave their comfort zones.  Watching the four guys and one gal coached by Jamie Foxx in the fine art of singing "Brat Pack" style,  I had expectations.

I figured this would be Matt's week to shine, but I wonder if Jamie's advice, followed by Matt, will be his downfall.  Matt's lower range just isn't that great and Jamie recommended a drop in the key, keeping Matt in chest voice.  I don't think it worked.  Matt struggled with pitch a few times and never seemed to get into the song.  I think he was more worried about being out of his comfort zone and singing those low notes.  Matt sang My Funny Valentine.  Not the best song choice for him either, though, maybe in a higher key....

Kris Allen sang The Way You Look Tonight and did a great job.  Good enough to win?  I don't think so, but good enough to land in the top three of this season.

Allison Iraheta performed Someone To Watch Over Me.  It was good.  She is good.  She has pipes; she has proven it time and time again this season.  But, her voice seemed a little forced.  Going into Season 8 vibrato seemed to be the way to go.  But excessive vibrato came in through a revolving door and it is on its way out...again.  Allison had a LOT of vibrato tonight.  I think that could be her downfall this week.  We'll know tomorrow night.

Now, for the two we all wait to hear.  Danny Gokey sang Come Rain or Come Shine.  During Coach Jamie's lesson,  he got in Danny's face or grill - maybe 2 or 3 inches away - and wanted Danny to bring it.  It may have been the best lesson Gokey ever learned.  Some boundaries need to be broken for growth to take place.  Danny looked like a star tonight.

Adam Lambert.  Not much more needs to be said.  Adam gave a sinister rendition of Feeling Good.  Sinister.  That is the word to use.  Adam's voice is sweet, but there is that sinister look he gives the camera to make you love him or almost fear him.  Paula used the word "sleazy" in her critique.  Adam's range and control, especially at the end of the song, makes him tonight's frontrunner.

Who will go home tomorrow night?  My money (if I was one to bet) is on Matt.  I don't think America will send the one lone female home just yet.  I think Kris has the pipes to stay, but I don't know for how long.  Danny and Adam are my picks for the top two.

America's time to vote tonight is almost over.  Who did you vote for?

I agree with you!! Matt was the worst in my opinion tonight...but, of course, I've always thought he was the worst...i never understand why the judges praise him...he is a justin timberlake copycat and desperate wannabe and has terribly unoriginal vocals...i hope he's booted tomorrow...allison does such a fantastic job considering her age, and her performance tonight was pretty good, but she needs to improve her song choice maybe if she wants to stay in the competition...Kris did a really good job and is so creative with his songs, it's great, plus his vocals are NICE...i think he'll make top 3, but i don't think he'll make it to the finale...Danny DID look like a star tonight, he is adorable i love him :) and he can sure sing, i would buy him album any day...and OMG I LOVE ADAM!! i have loved him every week since country week, and he never ceases to amaze!!!! his vocals are astounding!!! and his performances are to die for!!!! he makes every other contestant this season and all seasons in the past look average or worse!! he is BRILLIANT and OUTSTANDING!!!!! VOTE ADAM FOR SEASON 8 AMERICAN IDOL!!!

Yeah, Lexi, I agree with you.  Matt is pretty good, but not good enough.  I was surprised the judges used their save on him.  I also think Adam will win it all, with Danny a close second.  Thanks for taking the time to read and comment.
